Abstract
Listening skills are a crucial aspect of English language learning, but many students still struggle due to limited exposure to authentic spoken input. The BBC Learning English Podcast is one alternative medium that offers flexible and easily accessible listening material. This study aims to identify the strategies used by students, the challenges they face, and their learning experiences in using these podcasts to improve their listening skills. This study employs a qualitative approach with a case study design. A questionnaire was administered to seven second-semester students who had used the BBC Learning English Podcast in their studies. Based on the questionnaire results, two participants were selected for in-depth interviews, each representing high-exposure and low-exposure levels. The data were analyzed using thematic analysis. The results showed that students used strategies such as repetition, adjusting audio speed, using subtitles or transcripts, and focusing on overall meaning comprehension. The use of podcasts helped improve confidence and English comprehension skills, although students still faced challenges in terms of speaking speed, accent variations, and vocabulary limitations. This study concludes that the BBC Learning English Podcast can be an effective additional learning medium for improving listening skills, especially when supported by independent learning strategies.
