Abstract

This research explores junior high school students' experiences with integrating soft rock music into their English learning to enhance listening skills. The study aims to investigate how this musical approach aids in improving listening comprehension and to examine the students' responses to learning through music. By examining the intersection of music and language learning, the research seeks to provide valuable insights into effective teaching methods for English as a second language. Conducted in SMP Al-Hadi, the qualitative study utilized various data collection methods, including reflective diaries, classroom observations, and semi-structured interviews with four eighth-grade students in Bandung. These approaches allowed for a comprehensive understanding of the students’ experiences and the impact of using soft rock music in the classroom. The qualitative design offers a nuanced perspective on how music can serve as a tool for enhancing language skills among young learners. The findings of the research indicated that soft rock music created a relaxed and enjoyable environment for learning. Students reported that it helped reduce anxiety, which is often a barrier in language learning. They felt calm and focused during lessons, which led to increased motivation and engagement. The integration of music in the classroom encouraged active participation and facilitated the development of effective listening strategies, such as focusing on lyrics and seeking clarification when needed. Additionally, participants noted improvements in their listening comprehension, pronunciation awareness, and vocabulary acquisition, attributing these advancements to the clear structure of soft rock songs. However, some challenges emerged, such as fast-paced lyrics and distractions associated with singing. These obstacles underscore the necessity for careful song selection and the implementation of structured activities to make the learning experience more effective. In conclusion, the research supports the idea that soft rock music can be an effective tool for enhancing junior high school students' listening skills in English. Recommendations include the integration of music into lesson plans while addressing the comprehension challenges identified. Future research should aim to expand the participant pool and explore the effects of different musical genres on language acquisition to further substantiate these findings.
