Abstract

This research examines the construction of anti-hero through Miguel O’Hara and the hero archetype represented by Miles Morales. This research is grounded on Sikov’s theory of film as a system of meaning and hero’s journey theory by Joseph Campbell (2004) also several research about anti-hero characteristics mainly from Sánchez and Vidal-Mestre (2022). This research analyzes the several scenes from the film using the systematic structure that integrated the components from film studies such as mise-en-scène, cinematography, editing, and sound to form the meaning in the narrative and analyze the aspects of anti-hero characteristics and hero archetype. The researcher concluded that there are eight characteristics that used to analyzed the anti-hero character in the film. The result of this research concluded Miguel performing seven from eight characteristics that made Miguel considered embody anti-hero characteristic despite being an antagonist. As for the hero archetype, there are seventeen stages from Hero’s Journey. From the result, Miles performing eleven from seventeen stages. Miguel O’Hara as antagonist who embody anti-hero characteristics appear as the unique point of Miles’ journey where Miguel complicated the definition of being Spider-Man and it help Miles develop his own principles of becoming the true hero.
