Abstract

The rapid development of digital technology and social media has influenced the way people communicate and has encouraged the development of new and creative forms of language. TikTok, particularly its comment section, has become an interactive space where users communicate, express opinions, and use informal language. This study focuses on kitchen-related slang used in TikTok comments, referring to vocabulary related to food, cooking, and kitchen activities that is used with meanings different from their literal meanings. Although previous studies have discussed slang and language use on social media, limited attention has been given to kitchen-related slang, particularly its types, meanings, and functions in TikTok comment sections. Therefore, this study aims to identify the types of kitchen-related slang used by TikTok users and to analyze how these expressions are interpreted through their meanings and functions. This study employed a descriptive qualitative method. The data consisted of 126 selected comments collected from five TikTok accounts containing kitchen-related slang expressions. The data were collected through observation and note-taking and selected using purposive and snowball sampling. The data were analyzed through data reduction, data display, and conclusion drawing. The analysis was supported by Janet Holmes’ theory of language variation, William Labov’s theory of systematic language variation, Penelope Eckert’s concept of Communities of Practice, and Allan and Burridge’s (2006) classification of slang. The findings show that only two types of kitchen-related slang were found, namely Fresh and Creative and Flippant, with Fresh and Creative as the dominant type. Fresh and Creative mainly consists of individual words that have undergone semantic change, while Flippant consists of two or more words whose meanings differ from their literal meanings. The findings also show that kitchen-related slang undergoes semantic change from literal meanings related to food and cooking into figurative meanings used in digital communication. In terms of function, euphemistic expressions are used to convey compliments, appreciation, admiration, and other positive evaluations, while dysphemistic expressions are used to express criticism, mockery, contempt, and negative evaluations. Overall, this study shows that kitchen-related slang reflects linguistic creativity and demonstrates how language variation develops through social interaction and shared understanding among TikTok users in digital communication.
