Abstract
This study aims to identify the types of directive and commissive speech acts used by MrBeast in his YouTube video and to explain how these speech acts reflect his authority and social role. This research employed a qualitative descriptive design, using Searle’s (1979) Speech Act Theory to classify the utterances and Holmes’ (2013) sociopragmatic perspective to interpret the findings. The data were obtained from MrBeast’s YouTube video entitled “$1 vs $1,000,000,000 Nuclear Bunker,” which were transcribed and analyzed through identification, classification, and interpretation. The findings reveal 37 utterances containing directive and commissive speech acts, consisting of 31 directive utterances command 11, invitation 7, prohibition 7, request 3, warning 1, instruction 1, suggestion 1 and 6 commissive utterances promise 5, offer 1, with command and promise as the most dominant subtypes. The analysis further shows that these speech acts are closely related to MrBeast’s authority and social role, which shift dynamically according to the communicative context, encompassing at least ten roles, namely host, leader, guide, coordinator, protector, promoter, participant, content creator, decision-maker, and business owner. This study concludes that language in digital media functions not only to convey information but also to direct action, express commitment, and negotiate authority and social relationships between speaker and audience.
