Abstract
This study examines the types and pragmatic functions of expressive illocutionary acts produced by coaches and players in the post-game press conference following Game 5 of the 2023 NBA Finals between the Denver Nuggets and Miami Heat. It aims to identify the predominant expressive speech acts and explain how their functions reflect collective emotions and construct team identity. This study employs a descriptive qualitative method combined with pragmatic discourse analysis. The data consist of words, phrases, clauses, sentences, and contextually connected utterances produced by twelve non-journalist speakers in the audiovisual recording and transcript. Journalists’ questions are excluded as primary data but retained as contextual information. The theory used in this research are J. L. Austin’s distinction among locutionary, illocutionary, and perlocutionary acts and John Searle’s classification of expressive illocutionary acts. The findings identify 136 expressive units classified into twelve types. Praising or admiring is the most frequent type, with 39 occurrences (28.68%), followed by expressing happiness or joy with 23 occurrences (16.91%) and thanking or appreciating with 21 occurrences (15.44%). These acts function to distribute credit, acknowledge support, express shared joy and disappointment, maintain respect between opponents, demonstrate accountability, and reinforce unselfishness, trust, resilience, and collective responsibility. The study concludes that expressive speech acts do not merely reveal personal feelings; they also transform individual responses into public narratives of collective experience and team identity.
