Abstract

This study aims to determine the effectiveness of TikTok-based video blogging in improving the speaking performance of eighth-grade students at SMPN 1 Tarumajaya, Bekasi. This study was conducted to assess students’ speaking performance before and after the implementation of TikTok-based video blogging and to determine whether this approach significantly improved it. This study used a quantitative method with a one-group pre-experimental design that included a pre-test and a post-test. The study participants consisted of 22 eighth-grade students at SMPN 1 Tarumajaya, Bekasi. Data were collected through speaking performance tests administered before and after the treatment. The students participated in four sessions of TikTok-based video blogging activities during the study. Speaking performance was assessed using a speaking analysis rubric based on pronunciation, fluency, vocabulary, grammar, and coherence. Descriptive statistics, the Shapiro-Wilk normality test, and a paired-samples t-test were used for the analysis of the collected data using IBM SPSS Statistics version 27. The findings show that students’ average score on the pre-test was 58.91, while the average score on the post-test increased to 65.45, indicating an increase of 6.55 points following the implementation of TikTok-based video blogging activities. The normality test confirms that the pre-test and post-test data follow a normal distribution. In addition, the paired-samples t-test showed a p-value of 0.000 (p < 0.05), indicating a statistically significant difference in students’ speaking performance before and after the treatment. Therefore, the null hypothesis (H0) was rejected, and the alternative hypothesis (Ha) was accepted. To summarise, the video blogging activities based on TikTok are effective in improving the speaking performance of eighth graders of SMPN 1 Tarumajaya Bekasi. Based on the findings, it can be concluded that the use of TikTok as a tool for teaching spoken English enables students to develop their speaking performance through technology-mediated learning experiences.
