Abstract
Vocabulary plays an important role in foreign language teaching process. However, teachers need a technique to make students learn English easily and enjoyable. One of alternative techniques is Story Completion Technique (SCT). Thus, this research concerns about enriching students’ vocabulary (past form of action verbs) through story completion technique. The research was carried out in SMPN 1 Jatisari Karawang. The objectives of this research are to know students’ vocabulary mastery achievement before and after the implementation of SCT. And to know the significant difference of students’ vocabulary mastery before the implementation of SCT and after the implementation of SCT at second grade of SMPN 1 Jatisari. The method used in this research is Quantitative method with pre-experimental design or one-group pre-test post-test design. The samples are derived from the population of the eighth grade students of SMPN 1 Jatisari. To collect the data and to measure students’ vocabulary mastery achievement, the samples are given pre-test, treatment, and post-test. Based on the average score of pre-test 1441 and post-test 2194, students’ vocabulary (past form of action verbs) is significantly different. Moreover, the result of computing data showed that tcount is 10.04 and ttable ¬in the level of significant 5% is 2.06. If tcount ¬is less than ttable H0 will be accepted and Ha will be rejected. If tcount ¬is higher than ttable H0 will be rejected and Ha will be accepted. According to the data tcount 10.04 higher than ttable 2.06. It means that the alternative hypothesis (Ha) is accepted and the null hypothesis (H0) is rejected. Finally, it can be concluded that teaching vocabulary by using Story Completion Technique can improve students’ vocabulary at the seventh grade of SMPN 1 Jatisari Karawang. And teaching English vocabulary by using SCT is recommended for English teachers as it is an entertaining way to stimulate students to enrich their vocabulary.
