Abstract
In order to make an understandable communication of each other, people have to utter what they want to say clearly. Before saying something, the speaker formerly make such an assumption related to what they are going to say, in order to be understood by the hearer. It is called presupposition and included into Pragmatics domain. In this case, this research analyzes presupposition in the novel Woman at Point Zero written by Nawal El-Saadawi. To analyze this research, the researcher bounds the discussion based on the research questions, they are about what are presupposition performed in the novel and the implied meaning of the characters’ utterances. To answer the research questions, the researcher uses presupposition theory by Yule (1996) as the primary theory and the other theories as supporting theory. In analyzing the data, the researcher uses descriptive qualitative method since the form of the data are textual data, utterances of the characters in the novel. Several steps to analyze the data are identifying, classifying, interpreting and making conclusion based on the theory used. The researcher found 35 data of presupposition and 17 data which contain illocutionary function based on speech acts theory. The types of presupposition which are found as follows: 12 data of existential presupposition, 6 data have representatives function and 2 data as directives; 11 data of structural presupposition, 3 data have directives function and 1 data as representatives; 5 data of factive presupposition, 3 data have representatives function and 1 data as directives; 5 data of counter-factual presupposition, 1 data has 2 utterances which is each utterance has commissives and expressive function; 2 data of lexical presupposition, those are do not have illocutionary function. Based on the result of research, can be concluded that the most-used type of presupposition in the novel Woman at Point Zero is existential presupposition, and the most-used type of illocutionary function is representatives. It is related to the context of the story which emphasizes the existence of Firdaus (main character) to fight for justice. Theoritically, Yule’s theory can be used to analyze presupposition and be connected with speech acts theory to know about illocutionary function from an utterance. Practically, both of presupposition and speech acts can be used to analyze character’s utterances especially in the novel Woman at Point Zero by finding the context of the story at first.
