Abstract

Teaching English speaking is not easy because there are many things that have to be considered. That is why it is hard to make people speak in English. Thus, the teacher needs to employ some methods to help learners to be able to speak in English. This research is expected to help the teacher to use an alternative method to teach speaking skills to students, because practice makes perfect; help the students to provide a source of inspiration. Students can gain the knowledge and experience of the literature thus increasing the learning experience. Also students can prepare to practice their speaking ability. The research was aimed at portraying the teaching speaking process at The Center English Club Bandung. This research focuses on three research questions (1) How is the process of teaching speaking at ‘The Center’ English club Bandung; (2) What are the obstacles in the process of teaching speaking; (3) How is the members’ response of the process of teaching speaking at ‘The Center’ English Club Bandung. This research used qualitative method; case study to study a real-life phenomenon in depth, but such an understanding encompassed important contextual condition-because they were highly pertinent to the phenomenon of study. The data were obtained through observation, questionnaire, and interview. Then the data were analyzed to obtain triangulation data. It was based on literature and was not statistic. The results of this research were: first, The Process of teaching speaking at The Center mostly used Direct method for delivering the material to the learners. Moreover, the material was not too difficult because they use the natural conversation and have supporting facilities, activities, and supporting factors. Second, Some of the obstacles come from the learners during the teaching speaking. Most of the obstacles are hard to meet regularly between the teacher and the learners, and most about discipline; and also some of the students who have no skill in English cannot understand what the teacher said. And most of the time, they ran out of the conversation topic in the circle. Third, Most of the members who come and at The Center are enjoying their time learning English and practice their speaking ability because of different method, the flexible time, and different environment. It is strongly suggested that the teacher prepare the topic for conversation so they will not run out of the topic in the middle of conversation club. It also suggested that the teacher better to ask more questions to the learners so then it will build the learners’ confidence and motivate them to learn more and more.
