Abstract
Reading interest influences the students' reading comprehension. Therefore, it cannot be separated from language learning process. If students have higher interest in reading, they will engage and be active in learning process. The purpose of the study is to know: 1) the process of developing students’ reading interest by using trending topic articles and 2) the students’ responses toward trending topic articles used in reading classes. This research uses qualitative case study involved one lecturer and nine students in the second semester of English Education Department at UIN Sunan Gunung Djati Bandung. The data obtained from observation, interview, and questionnaires. The findings of the study show that the lecturer used two phases of reading interest development. The phases are triggered students’ situational interest and maintained students’ situational interest. To trigger students’ situational interest, the lecturer gives the examples using surrounding objects to give detail explanation. Furthermore, the lecturer used trending topic articles as the exercises to maintained students’ situational interest. The findings also show that the students give positive responses both to the use of trending topic articles and the teaching materials. It can be seen from the result of students’ responses to positive statements and negative statements. The total students who agree with positive statement are 7 students of 9 students. And the total of students who disagree with negative statements are 6 students of 9 students. It means, the students argued that trending topic articles help them to engage in the learning process and understand the materials easily.
