Abstract
English phrasal verbs are essential to be mastered. They are formed from the combination of verbs and prepositions. These combinations make new form of phrases that have different meaning from the lexical meaning of the each original word. Inevitably, EFL learners need to master these combinations in order to know the meaning of the words in case they want to translate them into their native languages. English translation ability is important as well to EFL learners especially Indonesians. It defines how good they are in English. Therefore, this research focused on the correlation between students’ mastery on English phrasal verbs and their translation ability. The research was aimed (1) to find out the students’ mastery on English phrasal verbs, (2) to find out the students’ translation ability, and (3) to find out the correlation between students’ mastery on English phrasal verbs and students’ translation ability. This research was conducted on the sixth semester students of English Education Department of UIN Sunan Gunung Djati Bandung involving 40 students. The research used a quantitative method with correlational design involving tests as the data collection technique. The result showed that students’ mastery on English phrasal verbs was high seen from the mean score of the test result that was 69.55. Furthermore, students’ translation ability is fair seen from the mean score of the test that was 66.38. The correlation determination test showed that determination of variable students' mastery on English phrasal verbs (X) is able to explain the variable the students' translation ability (Y) that is 39.69 %. This number indicates that the variable students' translation ability (Y) is influenced by factors other than Students' mastery on English phrasal verbs that is 60.31%. Furthermore, the t-test data shows that t count = 5.04 and t table = 2.02. It means that t count > t table. So, Ho is rejected and Ha is accepted. Based on the results, this research concludes that there was a positive correlation between students’ mastery on English phrasal verbs and students’ translation ability. Their mastery on English phrasal verbs can affect their translation ability.
