Abstract

ENGLISH In this research, researcher analyzes the metaphor and satire which delineate Muhammad (Mahomet) through new-historical critique in Francis Bacon’s The Essays. Bacon’s delineations toward Muhammad are different from delineation of Muhammad in Islamic tradition. Therefore, the researcher assesses that there are problems which caused the difference and interested to be researched. The researcher uses stylistics study to observe the way of the writer in writing the literary work. Metaphor and satire are the part of it. Both of them are studied till the aim of the writer can be seen, because, especially in metaphor, the meaning of one word is given by the process of giving meaning itself. Then, the process of giving meaning is related to the history of writing of The Essays. Here, the new-historical critique functioned to touch the different region of delineation of Muhammad. The researcher uses the descriptive method in investigating and analyzing the data. This research’s significances are to describe how metaphor and satire that used by Francis Bacon in delineating Muhammad and how the new-historical views toward both of them. The result of the research showed that metaphor and satire that delineate Mahomet in humiliation are formed by the power. That is known from the trace of the phase of translation of Alcoran. When Bacon wrote The Essays, he just read the poor Latin translation of it, but, few years after the essay published, in1694, good translation of Alcoran is establish, but after that, in 1877, the poor translation of the Alcoran spread again. It was peculiar, because, they did not do several deep researches toward Alcoran and the true history about Mahomet, whereas, They were in the renaissance age, and a part of them are able to read Arabic. The state as the proprietor of the power influenced them in accepting the scientific researches of Muhammad. The conclusion of this research is, there is intentional misunderstanding toward Muhammad which represented by Francis Bacon in The Essays which caused by the poor translation of the Alcoran that spread in Europe in that age. As the recommendation, the researcher hopes that this research does not stop till here. Similar researches on “Muhammad Studies” have to be continued. INDONESIA Dalam penelitian ini, peneliti menganalisa metaphor dan satire yang mengandung penggambaran Muhammad (Mahomet) dalam The Essays yang ditulis oleh Francis Bacon melalui kritik New-Historis. Penggambaran Bacon terhadap Muhammad sungguh sangat berbeda dari penggambaran yang dikenal dalam tradisi Islam. Oleh karenanya, peneliti menaksir bahwa ada masalah yang menyebabkan perbedaan penggambaran itu dan masalah itu sangat menarik untuk diteliti. Peneliti memanfaatkan kajian stilistika untuk mengamati bagaimana cara-cara penulis menulis karya sastranya. Metapor dan satire adalah bagian dari stilistika itu.keduanya akan dikaji sampai maksud penulis dapat difahami, sebab, khususnya dalam metaphor, makna satu kata itu ditentukan oleh proses pemaknaannya. Tentu, proses pemaknaan terkait erat dengan sejarah saat The Essays itu ditulis. Disini, kritik New-Historis difungsikan untuk menyentuh wilayah-wilayah yang berbeda dari penggambaran Muhammad itu. Peneliti menggunakan metode deskriptif dalam menginvestigasi dan menganalisis data.Tujuan penelitian ini adalah untuk menjelaskan bagaimana metaphor dan satire yang digunakan oleh Francis Bacon itu menggambarkan Muhammad dan bagaimana kritik New-Historis memandang keduanya. Penelitian ini menunjukan bahwa metapor dan satire yang menggambarkan Muhammad itu disebabkan oleh ‘kuasa’ negara. Hal ini terlihat dari fase-fase penerjemahan Al-Quran. Ketika Bacon menulis The Essays di Inggris, dia hanya membaca versi buruk terjemahan Al-Quran. Beberapa tahun kemudian setelah The Essays terbit, 1694 terjemahan Al-Quran yang baik beredar, namun, di tahun 1877, terjemahan yang buruk beredar lagi. Itu semua sangat ganjil sebab mereka tidak melakukan riset mendalam terhadap sejarah tentang Muhammad, padahal ketika itu mereka berada di zaman renaissance, serta beberapa diantara mereka sudah mampu membaca huruf-huruf Arab. Negara sebagai pemilik ‘kuasa’ mempengaruhi mereka dalam penerimaan riset-riset ilmiah tentang Muhammad. Kesimpulan penelitian ini adalah, ada kesalahfahaman yang disengaja terhadap Muhammad yang direpresentasikan oleh Francis Bacon dalam The Essays. Penyebabnya berupa terjemahan Al-Quran yang buruk yang tersebar di Eropa pada masa itu. Sebagai rekomenndasi, peneliti berharap peneliitian ini tidak berhenti sampai disini, penelitian semacam terkait Muhammad Studies harus dilanjutkan.
