Abstract

Lyric is one of the art forms that become an important part of the musical elements, which determines the theme, character, and message. This thesis is a study that discusses the lyrics of Bob Marley’s song. the lyric is a study that is most relevant to semiotic analysis. The researcher has analyzed the representation of the social justice in Bob Marley’s selected song lyrics. The problem in this research is then formulated into two questions: What are denotative and connotative meanings in Bob Marley’s selected song lyrics. How social justice is represented in Bob Marley’s selected song lyrics. Theory of this research is Roland Barthes’s theory of semiotic and Stuart Hall’s theory of representation. Hall’s theory of representation consists of “Meaning depends not only on the material quality of the sign, but also its symbolic, that it can convey meaning”. The data in this research are lyrics from Bob Marley’s song. Technique of collecting data that identifies the lyric contained the sign of social justice and consist of a piece of citing lyric. Then the steps of analyzing data including 1) identified data, 2) categorized data, 3) analyzed data based on related theories, 4) presenting conclusion from the data, which has been analyzed. The result of this research is divided into two discussions. First the analysis of denotative and connotative meanings in the lyric about social justice, this lyric show denotative meaning through word and sentence. The lyric has a denotation that explicit meaning, usually denotation refers to used language which literally true. The connotative meaning, the lyric has a connotation that implicit meaning. The lyric described the human’s life, such as criticizing, uncertainty, patience, resignation, and struggle. Second is representing of social justice in Bob Marley’s selected song lyrics according to Hall’s theory. After analyzing Bob Marley’s selected song lyrics, there can be concluded the representation of the social justice is represented by the piece of citing lyrics. Finally, the researcher suggests to the reader to improve the discourse of literature especially in semiotic realm about representation and sign to make better writing.
