Abstract

Literature is a reflection of human life that has dynamic character. It means literature always follows progress of events or period. One of literary genre is novel. Novel is a fiction work which contains a lot of problem of life, such as about love, sadness, life struggle and conflict. In every period or event novel describes a theme or problem that correlates with phenomenal event in each period. One of novel that describes about conflict is John Buchan's Greenmantle. John Buchan's Greenmantle describes about conflict particularly conflict between English and Turkey further is mentioned by the writer English as West or Europe's representative and Turkey as East representative. The writer focuses to analyze the appearance of conflict between West and East in John Buchan's Greenmantle, how they view the conflict and how they end it. The writer uses the descriptive method, and postcolonial approach. The writer assumes with Structural method, data can be elaborated deeply and widely. Moreover, structural method in this context is intrinsic analysis can explore the elements of novel profusely. While Postcolonial approach is based on the assumption that literary work is always talking about writer's background, history and culture symptom, such as politic, economy and religion. The writer explains the appearance of conflict between West and East in John Buchan's Greenmantle through each character who represents West and East Furthermore, the writer analyses about Western and East's view the conflict in John Buchan's Greenmantle, and the writer explain the end of conflict between West and east in John Buchan's Greenmantle. Finally, the writer concludes from explanation and analyzing that there are two kind of conflicts the novel- personal or micro conflict and macro conflict. Micro conflict or conflict inter personal is happened between Hannay character as English or West representative and Rasta Bey Character as Turkey or East representative. Hannay as West representative is helped by Saudi Arbunot and Blenkiron as American. Based on conflict inter personal the writer found that the placement of each character describes about the real of conflict that is occurred in that period. Macro conflict in this novel at the first time is occurred between English and German than spread to the other countries. Eventually, Turkey joins with German Alliances. The consequence of it, Turkey involves with war. Furthermore, the conflict ours between English and Turkey. Each side looks for reinforcement. English ask for help to America while Turkey asks for help to the East or Islaniccountries. The aearance of conflict occurs because economy and political interest. While personal conflict occurs because of depend and save face or prestige.
