Abstract

Swearword is word or phrase that cannot be interpreted literally, as the effect of its emotive feature that expresses feeling of the speaker. Nowadays the use of this language variation clear away not only in daily life but also in fictions. One of them is movie or film. This undergraduate thesis examines the subtitling of swearwords utterances in Logan movie. Subtitling is one of film translation which renders the source language (SL) dialogue, monologue, or narrative into target language (TL) in the form of synchronous caption at the bottom of the screen. The aims of the study are to find out the swearword’s types and function in the movie then to find out their subtitling in the Indonesian subtitle. In explaining the study, the researcher used some swearword theories by Ljung (2011) and Pinker (2007), and subtitling theories by Gottlieb (1992), Haryanto (2010) and Han and Wang (2014). Due to this, there are two research questions proposed: 1) What are the swearword types and functions that are provided in Logan movie?; 2) What are the subtitling patterns and strategies that are provided in the translation of swearwords in Logan movie? For answering the questions, the researcher used descriptive qualitative method with audio-visual and document material data collecting. According to the findings, some swearword utterances in the movie divided into four types of swearword; religious, scatological, sexual activity and mother theme. Meanwhile the functions, the swearwords are uttered in 5 different ways by Pinker (2007); descriptively (dysphemistic), abusively, idiomatically, emphatically, cathartically and also the three main function by Ljung (2011) stand-alone, slot filler and replacive swearing. Then it can be conclude that the swearword rendered into three patterns; omission, de-swearing and category shift by five different strategies; taming, paraphrase, deletion, transfer, and condensation.
