Abstract

Overlap is the transition between two speakers who are trying to speak at the same time. This usually happens when the two speakers compete to get something. There is an overlap that does not compete for something called non-competitive overlap. Non-competitive overlap often appears on talk shows on tv programs. The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon is the television program on NBC TV which contains some non-competitive overlaps, especially from the listener's responses. There are many responses from listeners who used non-competitive overlap when responding to the speaker. Therefore, this study aims to find out the types of noncompetitive overlaps and the types of adjacency pairs in The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon. The method of analysis in this research is descriptive qualitative. In analyzing the data, the researcher uses theories from Stolt (2008), Gardner (2001), Jefferson (1985) for types of non-competitive overlaps, Cutting (2002) for types adjacency pairs, and other related theories. The result of data analysis shows that the type often used by listeners to take turn to speak by speakers are namely acknowledgment tokens and the type of adjacency pairs often used are assessment and agreement.
