Abstract

Sign is a thing that represents an object. Simply, Pierce distinguishes sign into three classes: icon, index, and symbol. Sign and symbol in linguistics is described in this research. In addition, the sign and symbol is a word, a phrase that signifies an object that reference beyond itself. A symbol can represent human’s attitude like “communication”. The communication itself is divided into two: verbal and non-verbal communication. This research concentrates to analyze the novel written by Brown. The object that has been chosen in this research is Brown’s titled The Da Vinci Code. The problem analyzed in this research concerns identifying and interpreting the category of the sign and symbol of non-verbal communication in the novel through a process that is constructed by the relevant theory. The researcher used the research literature in the collection of books and references related to the topic of analysis, followed by using qualitative methods to retrieve citations that support the analysis of the researcher. Moreover, analysis results are present through descriptive methods. In collecting the data, the researcher used a content analysis or document analysis. Content analysis consists of analyzing the contents of documentary materials such as books, magazines, newspapers and the contents of all other verbal materials which can be either spoken or printed. The document was the novel entitled The Da Vinci Code that has been used in collecting the data. With the technique of analyzing data by using library research, and the steps of data analysis include 1) identifying the data, 2) categorizing the data and 3) concluding the whole of analysis. The result of this research is that there are the function of non-verbal communication as reinforcement and replacement of verbal communication. The researcher found there are so many data from the novel, but the researcher just took 40 data which included in non-verbal communication as reinforcement and replacement of verbal communication. Non-verbal communication is divided as reinforcement of verbal communication into kinesics, proxemics, and paralanguage. Besides, non-verbal as replacement of verbal communication divided into kinesics and paralanguage. Non-verbal communication is an important integrates part of human communication. This research mainly discusses the functions of non-verbal communication as reinforcement and replacement of verbal communication in Dan Brown’s “The Da Vinci Code”.
