Abstract
Nowadays, the phenomenon of the motorcycle communities and clubs has been popular in society. Their popularity is due to many aspects includis their unique slogans. They deal with the themes of friendship, brotherhood, and humanity. This paper is designated to investigate those slogans by following questions: 1. What are the meanings of motorcycle communities and motorcycle clubs’ slogans in Indonesia? 2. What are the influences of slogans on them? The researcher used Leech’s theory in answering those questions; denotative and connotative meaning. Denotative meaning is used to answer the first question. It is the meaning that was based on the lexical and lexeme or, in short, the dictionary’s meaning. Meanwhile, connotative meaning was used to find out the slogans’ influences on their members by exploring their purposes, actions, needs, situations, figurative language, and characteristic of language forms of the slogans. The data for this study wereobtained from the questionnaires that were distributed to the chiefs and members of the motorcycle communities and clubs. They are, then, be categorized into the column of separate slogan which, later, the analysis was done by using descriptive qualitative method. There are eight English slogans for each of the motorcycle communities and clubs. Structurally, the messages they tried to communicate were the emphasizes of the importance of the brotherhood, love, peace, safety riding, family, and equality. They tried to promote their clubs and communities by imposing the emphatic and emotional elements into their slogans. This investigation results the slogans communicate the values of brotherhood with different emphasizes; outside and inside. The clubs and communities emphasizing brotherhood outside offer the “new experience” of riding and gathering. It is the sensation of having new brothers that are found in the streets. They note that riding is not only for having fun, but it is the way on how to live the life that is filled by the brotherhood. As for the clubs and communities emphasizing the importance of brotherhood inside, they pick the emphatic words of slogans; solid, one soul, forever, we can, death, and family. The solid word emphasizes its members to strengthen brotherhood in the club and community. It implicates its existence. The word one soul emphasizes on the emotional involvement that represents the equality. The word forever implicates the importance of doing anything together. The word “we can” symbolizes the importance needs of togetherness. As for the family, the word emphasizes the importance of its members to regard the whole members as family.
