Abstract

Vocabulary as the vital aspect of learning Engish is the crucial issue to be discussed. It is found that many students have less vocabulary that obstructing the process of learning English. Respond this issue, this research tries to use Mobile Assisted Language Learning (MALL) to increase students’ academic vocabulary. Therefore the purpose of this research is measuring how significant the students’ academic vocabulary before and after the treatment using MALL. The research was used the quantitative research using pre-experimental research design in order to know how the students’ academic vocabulary before and after using MALL. The single class pretest-posttest design was used to measure how effective the use of MALL in increasing students’ academic vocabulary. The sample was taken from the tenth grade of social class in SMAN Jatinangor. Six meetings of treatment, this research used the vocabulary test as the instrument to measure the students’ academic vocabulary. The result of data can be seen from the mean of the pretest 45.65 as the result for the first research question. Meanwhile, the student's academic vocabulary get improve after the treatment using MALL. It can be proved based on the mean score of posttest that was 69.57 for the answer to the second research question. The last question research about how significant is the effectiveness of MALL for student’s academic vocabulary acquisition, and the result of normal gain is 0.40. The improvement is in medium category according to index n-gain interpretation. The research showed that the use of Mobile Assisted Language Learning can improve students academic vocabulary significantly. This method can help the English teacher to increase students’ vocabulary in a simple and modern way.
