Abstract

This research is discussed about the use of swearwords in Instagram platform. Swearwords is the words that used in swearing as the represents of linguistic behavior which is always related to emotive utterance types. Since Instagram is a current communication media that people are using this platform to show their emotions and thoughts. Then this research aimed to discuss about the classifications of swearwords in Instagram comments column of @farrahabraham also the reason what makes people used swearwords in the Instagram comments column of @farrahabraham. To find the result of those aims, the research is using the descriptive approach. Then to collect the data, this research is using the purposive sampling because the source of data choose by the most commented post in the Instagram account of @farrahabraham in order to get a lot of comments which contained the swearwords. After collecting and analyzing the data, then this research has a result that in Instagram comments column of @farrahabraham all the classifications of swearword are contained. This research is using the swearwords classifications by Geoffrey Hughes, they are; general swearwords, anatomical insult, animal term, excretion, genitalia, religion, and stupidity. For the reason of using swearwords, this research is using the theory from Ljung, it mentioned that swearwords pronunciation is usually related to emotional speakers. Swearing is a direct expression of the speaker’s attitude toward what the other people is speaking about. Then the expressions that is found in the Instagram comments column of @farrahabraham are swearing to express angry or aggression, swearing to express sympathy, swearing to express happiness or joy, swearing to express surprise, and then swearing to express disgust.
