Abstract
Paraphrasing activity allows the students to interpret what they have understood from the text in reading activity. This research investigates the correlation between students’ reading comprehension and their paraphrasing writing ability. There are two hypothesis in this research; null hypothesis (Ho) and the alternative hypothesis (Ha). The null hypothesis says “There is no correlation between students’ reading comprehension and their paraphrasing writing ability”. Then, Ha says “There is a correlation between students’ reading comprehension and their paraphrasing writing ability”. The problem that is emphasized in this research is how reading comprehension correlates with their paraphrasing writing ability in learning process in English Education Department, this research was also intended to find out how is the learners’ reading comprehension and their paraphrasing writing ability in senior year and to know whether reading comprehension and paraphrasing writing ability correlate each other. The design of this research was correlation quantitative method. The population was limited to sixth-semester students of English Education Department of UIN Sunan Gunung Djati Bandung. Reading comprehension test score and paraphrasing writing ability test score as instruments given to the 40 students. The results of those scores were analyzed to find out the correlation by using Pearson’s correlation calculation in SPSS 20. Students’ reading comprehension average score was 74.13 means good level score. As for the paraphrasing writing mean or average score, is 75, means good paraphrasing writing. Results show that the students’ reading comprehension and their paraphrasing writing ability were indicated a moderate correlation with correlation score result is 0.639, in the scale of 0.40-0.70 and the score of “rcount”=0,639 is higher than “r table” with degree of significant α=5% (0,312) and 1% (0,3665) with n=40, it indicates that the score of correlation coefficient is significant. In other words, the students’ reading comprehension and their paraphrasing writing ability are significantly correlated with each other.
