Abstract

One of the difficulties in pronunciation is stressing the words. To avoid that problem, word stress can be learned by the students to reach their fluency and make the meaning clearer, one of media to learn locating of word stress is through audiobooks. Audiobooks are called spoken books, talking books, or narrated books, are recordings on a CD or digital file of a book by reading aloud for practicing listening and imitate while reading. Therefore, the researcher adopted the audiobooks in word stress learning, in order to make the word stress learning easier. The purposes of study are: (1) to find out the students’ pronunciation ability in locating word stress before being stimulated with audiobooks; (2) To find out the students’ pronunciation ability in locating word stress after being stimulated with audiobooks; (3) And to find the significant improvement of students’ pronunciation ability in locating word stress between before and after being stimulated with audiobooks. Furthermore, this research employed quantitative methods by dividing into four steps in collecting data: pre-test, treatment, and post-tests. This research was conducted at MTs Al-Jawami Cileunyi, involving 30 students of the 8th grade. The students were also given treatments three times. The research found that students’ pronunciation ability in locating word stress before being stimulated with audiobooks was fair. The highest score of pre-test before stimulated with audiobooks was 70, and the lowest was 42 with the mean score was 51.93. Students’ pronunciation ability in locating word stress after being stimulated with audiobooks was good. The highest score of the post-test after stimulated with audiobooks was 89, and the lowest was 60 with the mean score 72.760. There is a significant difference between the students’ pronunciation ability in locating word stress before and after being stimulated with audiobooks. It was seen from the t-test data showing that t count = 22.288 and t table = 3.038. It means that t count > t table. So, Ho is rejected and Ha is accepted. It showing that using audiobooks was effective in improving students’ pronunciation ability in locating word stress. This research concluded that using audiobooks is effective in improving students’ pronunciation ability in locating of word stress. Therefore, teachers are suggested to use audiobooks, grow their pronunciation interest and facilitate them.
