Abstract

Compliment is an assessment that contains positive words which can provide an evaluation of a work or action, it can make the person who receives the compliments feel happy and more motivated to remain the best. The compliment is the kind of expressive speech act. Nowadays, people can find out how the compliment is given to others through the television programs or television shows, one of them is “Britain’s Got Talent”. Therefore, this research focuses on describing and analyzing the types and the functions of compliments used by the judges in semi-final seasons of Britain’s Got Talent show 2018. This research uses pragmatic analysis to discuss the research, using Wolfson’s theory (1983). The method in this research used descriptive qualitative. This method does not contain any number from the result of data. This research used the words to give description of data. The data are taken from video of Britain’s Got Talent in semi-final seasons 2018 in YouTube channel of Anthony Ying. The result of this research shows that the compliment used by the judges in semi-final seasons of Britain Got Talent shows 2018 are mostly related to the compliment on the ability compliment, while the other, such as, personality compliment are rarely mentioned by the judges than the ability compliment. Moreover, types of appearance and possession compliment are the least to be used by the judges. Meanwhile, there are five functions which exist in the data analysis, they are: to encourage the addressee in keeping good work or motivating to do the best, to express admiration or approval of the addresser to the addressee, to give positive evaluation of the addresser to the addressee, to strengthen or even replace other speech-act formulas, and to soften criticism of the addresser.
