Abstract
The purpose of this research is to analyze the compatibility of the materials in the BSE textbook that used at SMP Al-Islam Bandung for grade VIII of junior high school to the criteria of Cunningsworth’s theory. This research analyzes BSE textbook entitled: “English in Focus”. The textbook is chosen because that the BSE textbook is the most used in the school. Also, the textbook is provided and publisher by the government. In addition, the textbook is easy to be accessed. And, the textbook’s price is cheaper than the other English textbook. The research adopted the qualitative content analysis method. The points to be analyzed are language content and the criteria of students’ need in learning English on the textbook. Finally, this research finds out how each item of the checklists meet the criteria of good English textbook according to Cunningsworth’s theory. In addition, it concludes the result of textbook analysis in the form of percentage that has the rating in each category of the textbook evaluation. The categories are: excellent category belongs to 76-100%, good category belongs to 51-75%, fair category belongs to 26-50%, and poor category belongs to 0-25%. The result of the language content analysis is feasible to the criteria of Cunningsworth’s theory and the material meets the criteria of students’ need. This research shows that textbook analysis has totally excellent category in the point of grammar, discourse and the variety of the language and their percentage is 100%. However, the result of vocabulary point has the good category and the percentage of the vocabulary point is 68,75%. In addition, the results of students’ need criteria are: the highest point is gotten by the need to communicate effectively and it gets 12 points. Then, the second higher point is gotten by the need to be familiar with the language system and it gets 10 points. Next, the third high point is gotten by the need to take on more responsibility for their own learning and it gets 8 points. And, the last point is gotten by the need for challenge and the need for cross-culture and they get 5 points. Having analyzed the book English in Focus for grade VIII there are some following suggestions that can be recommended for teacher, researcher and publisher. The suggestion for English teachers, they should select the media of learning and they should evaluate the media in order to achieve the process of learning easier. Also, they should not use only one media to help them teaching English language. And for researcher and publisher, they should evaluate the textbook using Cunningswoth’s theory in order the user of the textbook know that the textbook usage fulfill the evaluation criteria based on Cunningsworth or not. So, the users know the quality of content of the textbook.
