Abstract

Language is instrument which people use to communicate in society. Language is the system of signs constructing as a primary form of communication. For instance, journalism language has different structure with other language. Sometimes journalism term in the newspaper is more difficult to comprehend. Thus, this research is talking about difficulties of the reader toward headline The Jakarta Post newspapers. This data research is taken from headline The Jakarta Post, because it can make response by the reader of news text. Besides that, this research is also talking about the difficulties faced by respondent in understanding headline The Jakarta Post Newspapers. The researcher uses several theories that related to problem namely Reading comprehension, Comprehension Difficulties (2011), Journalism, Mass media, and Headline. The theories which related with this reaseach include of that theory is used to answer research question reader’s difficulties toward The Jakarta Post headline and the second research question to find the difficulties faced by respondent in understanding headline. Qualitative descriptive method is used to examine and interpret the problem. In taking the data researcher uses purposive sampling from respondents and data source from The Jakarta Post headline. There are ten headlines taken from the newspaper, the questionnaire are given to respondents whom the student of BSI in UIN in seventh semester. The result of data analysis in twenty respondents there are 80 percen of The Jakarta Post headline is difficult to understand. Generally, the headline cannot understand by respondent. The respondents cannot understand the whole news when they read headline only. Moreover, there are four difficulties faced by the respondents in understanding headline there the structure of headline, vocabularies, using short sentence, and using journalism term.
