Abstract

The associative meaning of the Architects album song lyrics "Holy Hell" was chosen by researchers because the title is the lyrics included in the language. Language is a communication and interaction tool with humans to understand expressions of the speakers, especially songwriters. Therefore, this study contains 2 questions, namely, (1) What types of associative meanings are used in the lyrics of the album "Holy Hell" ?, (2) What the functions of associative meanings used in the lyrics of the album "Holy Hell" ?. The purpose of this study is to find the type and function of associative meanings used in song lyrics on the album "Holy Hell". In this study, researchers used Leech's theory of associative meanings to find the types of associative meanings used in the lyrics of the album song "Holy Hell". Also to find the function of associative meaning used in the lyrics of the album song "Holy Hell", researchers used the same theory. To answer the question, researchers used descriptive qualitative methods to classify and identify the types of associative meanings in the lyrics of the album song "Holy Hell" and their functions. The data in this study were obtained from the lyrics of Architects's album "Holy Hell", then researchers collected, analyzed, and discussed the data. The results of this study, the researcher found 59 associative meaning data in this research, 3 data from connotative meanings, 5 data from stylistic meanings, 31 data from affective meanings, 10 from reflective meanings, and 10 data from collocative meanings. Meanwhile, researchers also found 59 data from the function of associative meanings used in song lyrics including 3 data to associate expressions in the real world, 5 data for social delivery and language style, 31 data for conveying feelings and attitudes, 10 data for the delivery of new meanings, 10 data for conveying the relationship of a word. Based on the results of the study, researchers can conclude that the most of associative meanings used in the lyrics of the album song "Holy Hell" is affective meaning. Therefore, the function of the associative meaning used in the Archtects album "Holy Hell" is to convey the feelings and attitudes of the songwriter.
