Abstract

Suffragette is a movie that tells a group of working women struggling to gain women’s suffrage in Great Britain. This working women's group carried out its struggles in militant ways while Iron Jawed Angels is a movie that tells a group of women from different backgrounds of professions struggles to get women’s suffrage in the United State of America. Many of their struggles are carried out in legal and peaceful ways. The similarities of women's efforts and the differences in how women obtain the right to vote from the two movies become the background of this research. Thus the researcher chooses the issues of women’s oppression and struggles as the research topics. And according to the research background, the purposes of this research are to describe the oppression and struggle of women from each movie. Also, to describe the similarities of women's oppression and struggle from both movies while several research methods used by the researcher are qualitative method proposed by Ratna (2015), descriptive analysis method proposed by Ratna (2015), and the comparative literary method proposed by Bassnett (1995). The result of the research is the struggles made by women in the movie Suffragette are dominant in illegal and aggressive ways while the women’s oppression in the movie of Suffragette including the negative stereotype about women, limited participation of women in several spheres, exploitation, and violence toward women. Then the analysis result about struggle of women in the movie of Iron Jawed Angels is most of the women's efforts to gain suffrage pursued through peaceful and legal means while the analysis results about women’s oppression in the movie Iron Jawed Angels are the existence of negative stereotypes about women, limitation for women's participation in several fields, gender exploitation, and there is violence toward women. From the analysis result of each movie, the researcher finds some similar women’s struggles in the movie Suffragette and Iron Jawed Angels that women carried out their efforts in militant and peaceful ways. While the similarities of women’s oppression in the movies caused by negative stereotypes about women. Thus women have limited participation in several spheres. Finally, after analyzing the movie Suffragette and Iron Jawed Angels, the researcher concluded that women are oppressed caused by some external factors including negative stereotypes about women and government policies that make women can not participate in several spheres. Then women make various efforts to eliminate the oppression
