Abstract

The purposes of this research are 1) to discover the categories and dominant categories of swear words used by male and female gamers, 2) to reveal the reason of swearing by male and female gamers. This research refers to the theory of Ljung about swearing. This research applies qualitative method with content analysis approach to find out the objective of the research and select the data by purposive sampling. In collecting the data, the researcher applies document collection and the videos were selected and downloaded from www.youtube.com by the researcher. The data is analyzed through preparing, coding, representing the findings, interpreting and finally concluding and suggesting by the researcher. The results showed that there are 261 times of swearing utterances (95 times by female and 166 times by male) contained 30 different types of words in 7 categories of swear words. These are the religious theme (11 types), the scatological theme (6 types), the sex organs theme (1 type), the sexual activities theme (3 types), the mother (family) theme (3 types), the minor theme (2 types), euphemism type (4 types). Also, there are 15 reasons which caused the speaker to swear. Those are swearing for expressing emotive reason such as happy, relaxed, grateful, hopeful, anger, annoyance, peeved, scared, triggered, surprised, panic, bored, disappointment and for doing something as well as for exclamation only. Based on the results, in conclusion, the religious theme is the most dominant categories used by male and female gamers. Swearing commonly happened because of emotive reason in speaker’s feeling. Moreover, male gamers swore more often than female gamers and female gamers use euphemism more often than male.
