Abstract

ENGLISH: Euphemism is the substitution of language from taboo or harsh words into soft and polite words. Allan & Burridge (1991:11) describes that euphemism is used as an alternative to dispreferred expression, in order to avoid possible loss face. So that everything looks normal and nothing is distorted or offended, then euphemism becomes the solution. Hence euphemism is interesting to be analyzed in order to get information behind the word, phrase or sentence which contains in the news text. Therefore, this research is conducted to find out the types and functions of euphemism used in The Guardian’s online newspaper. The writer uses semantics approach while using the theory of euphemism by Keith Allan and Kate Burridge (1991). The writer applies descriptive- qualitative method. This method does not contain any number from the result of data. This research used the words to give description of data. The data are taken from The Guardian’s online newspaper that focuses on violence topics through the process of reading the newspaper, selecting and classifying the selecting data based on the type and function of euphemism. The writer finds the main findings of this research. Those are: a). eleven types of euphemism: metaphor (14 data), rhyming slang (2 data), remodeling (3 data), circumlocution (29 data), clipping (3 data), abreviation (2 data), omission (6 data), one-for-one substitution (3 data), hyperbole (6 data), understatement (33 data) and euphemism through borrowing (1 datum) and b). four functions of euphemism: being polite (37 data), gloss-over (18 data), avoiding taboo (14 data) and disguising (33 data). From these findings, the writer concludes that the use of euphemism on violence topics contained in The Guardian’s online newspaper is to make the news softer and polite. INDONESIA: Eufemisme adalah pergantian bahasa dari kata-kata tabu atau kasar menjadi kata-kata lembut dan sopan. Allan dan Burridge (1991:11) menyebutkan bahwa eufemisme digunakan sebagai alternatif untuk ekspresi yang tidak disukai dan untuk menghindari kemungkinan hilang muka. Agar semuanya terlihat normal dan tidak ada yang terdistorsi atau tersinggung, maka eufemisme yang menjadi solusinya Karenanya eufemisme menarik untuk diteliti agar bisa mendapatkan informasi dibalik sebuah kata, frasa atau kalimat yang terkandung dalam teks berita. Selanjutnya, penelitian ini dilaksanakan untuk mencari tipe-tipe dan fungsi- fungsi dari euphemism yang digunakan dalam berita online The Guardian. Penulis menggunakan pendekatan semantik sekaligus menggunakan teori eufemisme oleh Keith Allan dan Kate Burridge (1991). Penulis menggunakan metode kualitatif deskriptif. Metode ini tidak mengandung angka dari hasil penelitian tetapi menggunakan kata-kata untuk memberikan deskripsi data. Data penelitian ini diambil dari berita online The Guardian tentang topik kekerasan melalui proses membaca berita, memilih dan mengklasifikasikan data yang terpilih berdasarkan tipe dan fungsi eufemisme. Penulis menemukan temuan utama dari penelitian ini, yaitu: a). sebelas tipe dari eufemisme: metaphor (14 data), rhyming slang (2 data), remodeling (3 data), circumlocution (29 data), clipping (3 data), abreviation (2 data), omission (6 data), one-for-one substitution (3 data), hyperbole (6 data), understatement (33 data) dan borrowing (1 data) dan b). empat fungsi dari eufemisme: being polite (37 data), gloss-over (18 data), avoiding taboo (14 data) dan disguising (33 data). Dari penemuan diatas, penulis menyimpulkan bahwa penggunaan eufemisme tentang topik kekerasan yang terdapat dalam surat kabar online The Guardian adalah untuk membuat berita menjadi lebih lembut dan sopan.
