Abstract

This research is intended to investigate the effect of podcasting media for teaching speaking to the 8th grade students of SMP Terpadu Daruzzahra Ciawi Tasikmalaya. The main purpose is to know whether the students who are taught by using podcasting will get a better skill in their speaking compared to those who are not. The topic is given to the students is the expression of asking and giving opinion and asking and offering for help. In this research, the independent variable is podcasting media and the dependent variable is the students’ mastery of speaking. The subjects of the study are 25 students in the academic year of 2018-2019. The design of this research is quantitative design and the method uses experimental research. The experimental design is applied in this study is pre-experimental design with one group pretest-posttest design. The instruments of the research are pretest and posttest. The result of the research shows that there is a difference between pretest and posttest score of the students. The average score of pretest is 57,4 and the average score of posttest is 78,4. Then, the result of paired samples t-test shows that t-count is 14,098. While, the result for t-table is 1,50, it can be seen from significant degree or α = 0,05/2 and df 19. In this research, Ho is rejected and Ha is accepted because 14,098 > 1,50 or t-count > t-table. It can be concluded from the hypothesis of paired sample t-test that there is significant difference of students’ speaking skill before and after using podcasting. Related to the result of the research, it can be concluded that podcasting has significant better effect in learning speaking process to the 8th grade students of SMP Terpadu Daruzzahra Ciawi Tasikmalaya. Podcasting is statistically significant better for the student’s speaking skill. The students’ scores are increasing after they are taught by using podcasting. Moreover, podcasting is recommended in teaching learning process especially for speaking. Meanwhile, the teacher should prepare the materials and teach how to pronounce and ask students to practice. For the students, they have to be more active and interested in learning activities.
