Abstract

The purposed in this research are: 1) To know the process of teaching critical thinking skill through the Issue of the text, 2) To find out the students’ writing ability in writing a report text, 3) To investigate the elements of critical thinking emerged in their writing. This study used a qualitative research design, specifically a case study. The participants were the nine students of 11th-grade students of Senior High School (SMA) Modern Riyadhul Jannah Islamic Boarding School. Observation and document analysis were used as instruments. The observation data aimed to find out the process of teaching-learning critical thinking skills through the issue of the text and to know the students’ response in teaching and learning critical thinking skills. Then, the document analysis conducted to analyze the students writing ability in writing report text, and students’ skills in elements of critical thinking skills emerged in their writing. The finding in this research showed first, the process in teaching critical thinking and elements of critical thinking skills were established by implementing the procedure of teaching critical thinking skill; introducing critical thinking, the collecting information of students, explaining the claim, students analyzing of the claim, students memorizing, explaining assumption, students analyzing of the assumption, and group presentation. Second, the students’ writing ability in writing a report text showed that six out of nine students have high scores in terms of writing or the structure that used in writing report text such as content, organization, language use, vocabulary, and mechanics. Meanwhile, there are three students have low scores, they still have some shortcomings and errors in writing or the structures that used in writing such as content, organization, language use, vocabulary, and mechanics. Third, the students writing project in critical thinking and elements of critical thinking that emerged in their writing quite good and mastered in terms of elements critical thinking skills, all of the students emerged their critical thinking and elements of critical thinking skills regarding claims. In addition, there are five students from nine students who write and bring up in their writings regarding assumptions. The conclusions are the first process teaching critical thinking and the elements of critical thinking skill, the students quite understood and gave their response to the topic that was discussed. The second is the students writing ability in writing report text showed that they were quite mastered in the term of writing ability. And the last is the students writing project about critical thinking and elements of critical thinking showed that they quite mastered in the term of claim. But, in term of assumption they did not show up only five from nine students showed their arguments or understanding about assumption. While the students writing ability used Indonesian has not influences and it’s only translater from the students writing ability used English.
