Abstract

Detective fiction has been raised in early 19th century by Edgar Allan Poe. In United States, Franklin W. Dixon introduced The Hardy Boys novel series, one of the series is the Mystery of Smugglers Cove. Then researchers analyze the characterization and conflict in the novel. This research uses theory Burhan Nurgiyantoro to find characterization and conflict. In this research, the researcher used descriptive qualitative method to analyze the data. After that, the researcher analyzed characterization and conflict in Hardy Boys novel: the Mystery of Smugglers Cove. First, researcher analyze characterization in this novel, which is divided into flat characters and round characters, static and dynamic characters, protagonists and antagonists, main or central characters and peripheral characters. Second, the researcher analyzed the conflict in this novel, which is divided into two internal conflicts and external conflicts. The final of the research is conclusion and suggestions were drawn based on the findings of the research.
