Abstract

ENGLISH: This research focuses on the compliments and compliment responses used by the characters of Riverdale TV series. This research was conducted to find out the topics and the functions of the compliment, and also to describe the compliment responses expressed by the addressees of the TV series. This research is qualitative research and uses pragmatic approach. The data of this study come from conversations containing compliments, verbal and non-verbal acts of compliment response. The results of the data analysis are described as follows: First, there are four types of compliment’s topics employed by the characters in the Riverdale TV series. The types of compliment’s topics are analysed following Wolfson’s theory of compliment, namely personal appearance, possession, general ability and specific-act ability. It is also found that there are eight types of compliment function based on Wolfson and Judd theory, they are: to increase and consolidate solidarity, to create or maintain rapport etc., there are thirteen types of compliment responses employed by the characters in the TV series entitled Riverdale. Following to Robert K. Herbert’s theory, there are nine types of compliment response, they are appreciation token, comment acceptance, praise upgrade, comment history, return, scale down, qualification, no acknowledgement, and kinesics. It can be concluded that many characters express compliment on the topic of Ability. The compliment aims to give positive evaluation. Most of the addressees who respond the compliment by kinesics. It is when the addressee responds with body language such as smile, cry, eye contact etc INDONESIA: Penelitian ini berfokus kepada pujian dan tanggapannya yang digunakan oleh karakter series televisi Riverdale. Penelitian ini dilakukan untuk menemukan topik dan fungsi dari pujian dan juga untuk menggambarkan tanggapan yang di ekspresikan oleh penerima pujian dari series televisi Riverdale. Penelitian ini adalah penelitian kualitatif dan menggunakan pendekatan pragmatic. Data penelitian di dapat dari percakapan yang berisi pujian dan tanggapan, baik perlakuan verbal maupun non-verbal. Hasil dari analisis data digambarkan seperti berikut: Pertama, terdapat empat tipe topik pujian yang di ungkapkan oleh karakter series televisi Riverdale. Tipe topik pujian dianalisis berdasarkan teori pujian oleh Wolfson, mereka adalah personal appearance, possession, general ability dan specific-act ability. Telah ditemukan juga delapan fungsi pujian berdasarkan teori Wolfson dan Judd, diantaranya: untuk meningkatkan solidaritas, untuk membangun hubungan, dll. Terdapat sembilan tipe tanggapan yang di ungkapkan karakter di series televisi Riverdale, berdasarkan teori Robert K Herbert, diantaranya: appreciation token, comment acceptance, praise upgrade, comment history, return, scale down, qualification, no acknowledgement, dan kinesics. Bisa disimpulkan bahwa terdapat banyak karakter yang mengekspresikan pujian pada Topic of Ability. Pujian bertujuan untuk memberikan Positive Evaluation. Kebanyakan penerima pujian merespon pujian dengan kinesics. Kinesics adalah ketika penerima pujian merespon dengan Bahasa tubuh seperti tersenyum, menangis, kontak mata dll.
