Abstract

A good translation has an equivalence and it is created after a translations text shows some shifts such as level shift and category shift. This research addressed two problems: How do level shifts occur in the “Zootopia” subtitle from English into Indonesian Language? And How do category shifts occur in the “Zootopia” subtitle from English into Indonesian Language? To find out the answer, This research applies descriptive qualitative research. The source of data is English movie subtitle Zootopia as Source Language (SL) and its Indonesian subtitle as Target Language (TL). The researcher collects the data through documentation and analyzes them by comparing both English and Indonesian subtitling and were analyzed using Catford’s theory (1965) and supporting theory about language equivalence by Nida and Taber (1982). The result of this research is first, from 118 data, there are 48 data used as the representative for this research. From 118 data, the researcher found 22 data or 18.70% belongs to level shift and 96 data or 81.30 % belongs to category shift which divided into 34 data or 28.80% belongs to structure shift, 20 data or 16.90 % belongs to class shift, 36 data or 30.50 % belongs to unit shift and intra system shift with 6 data or 5.1%.The 48 representative data are divided into 8 data for level shift and 40 data for category shift. level shift into some forms, there are 4 items from Past Tense into word, 3 items from Present Continuous Tense into word, and 1 item Present Perfect Tense into word. In category shift, there are structure, unit, class and intra- system shift. In structure shift found 10 items SL Head into TL Modifier, 1 item SL Predicate into TL Subject Complement and 1 item from SL Subject Complement into TL Predicate. Then, in unit shift are 3 item found from SL word into TL Phrase, 2 items SL word into TL Clause, 12 items SL Phrase to TL Word and 3 item SL Clause to TL Word. Then, found 1 item class shift from SL Noun into TL Adjective, 1 item class shift from Noun into Verb, 2 items class shift from Adverb into Verb, and 1 item class shift from Adjective into Verb and the last found 3 items from intra- system . The researcher concludes that the translator could use the equivalence and the shift as a translation procedure to make TL users understand the SL means.
