Abstract

Language is a fundamental device used by people to communicate. A sentence or an utterance in which people use to express their feelings and thoughts is generally containing either literal meaning or non-literal meaning. In the lyric of the songs, there must be a meaning. Then everything related to language must be related to meaning, like a song, every lyric must contain another meaning, and it can be seen from analysis of the connotative meaning. The object of this research is moral and religious song lyrics of Harris J because almost all of the lyrics are contained values that lead to morality and religious values. Therefore this research is aimed to shows the kinds of connotative meaning and the meaning of connotative words and phrase of the moral and religious songs of Harris J. The problems of this research are (1) what kinds of connotative meaning in moral and religious song lyrics of Harris J and (2) how to understand the meanings of connotative words or phrase in moral and religious song lyrics of Harris J. The research uses the theory of Cruse (1997), there are three types of connotative meaning, such as; positive, negative, and neutral connotation. This research will employ descriptive qualitative approach. Furthermore, the writer used content analysis as the type of qualitative research because this type is suitable with this research purpose which is to analyze the kinds and the meaning of connotative words and phrase which were in the form of documentary sources (lyrics of Harris J's songs) and to draw the conclusions systematically. The writer collected the data by downloading the songs and the lyrics, reading the song lyrics, and making a list of the kinds that contain connotative meaning. Then the writer analyzed the data by identifying the connotative meanings, figuring out the meaning of the words and phrase of the song lyrics. The results of this research shows that there are 64 data included as connotative meaning that consist of 52 data of positive connotation, 9 data of negative connotation, and 3 data of neutral connotation. The message that can be interpreted from the whole lyrics of Harris J's songs in this research are categorized into moral and religious messages. Harris J's write his songs with many positive lyrics with the purpose to deliver a message to the listener of his songs to always be positive people in this life. The writer suggests the next writer conduct a research in semantic field by using different object of the study and also uses different theory in order to get more understanding about connotative meaning.
