Abstract

The outbreak of Covid-19 forced schools and universities to shut down their face-to-face activities. They had to suddenly convert classes into virtual meetings. These might be uncomfortable for both teachers and students. Responding to this issue, in this study, I evaluated how an online class of Paragraph Writing was done. I explored the teacher’s obstacles in delivering the online class and investigated the students’ responses to the class. This study was a case study, conducted in the class of Paragraph Writing (PW) from May 3rd to July 6th, 2020. PW was one of the second-semester subjects in the 2019 curriculum of English Education Department UIN Sunan Gunung Djati Bandung. It had three different classes, which one got involved in this study. The involved class consisted of 39 students and had one teacher. During the pandemic, the class was moved to Schoology, a learning management system. To collect the data, two different techniques were used. First, I interviewed the teacher to understand the problems she faced during the online class. Second, I distributed a questionnaire via Google Form to the students to get their responses to the class. To support my interpretation and analysis of the collected data, I also observed how the class was done. The results of the data analysis show that the teacher’s obstacles were teacher-student interaction, online-class design, and the bad internet connection. From the students’ perspectives, the class could be followed well. They stated that they engaged in the cycle of teaching and learning argumentative paragraphs, understood the materials, and completed the assignments. However, I highlighted some challenges the students got, which must be anticipated in the future class, such as the poor internet connections, the students’ misinterpretation of teacher instructions, and Schoology features. In conclusion, the online class of PW was executedacceptably. The teacher and students could engage in teaching and learning. However, some aspects need improvements, such as the teacher-student interactions, the features supporting the lively interactions, and the internet connection.
