Abstract

This research focuses on finding the comparison of grotesque characters in three novels; Frankenstein, The Strange Case of Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde, and The Hunchback of Notre Dame using Jones and Boggs theory about characterizations, which are physical appearance, personality, social status, and social relationship. Three main characters, the Monster, Jekyll and Hyde, and Quasimodo are portrayed as grotesque characters that usually have oddity, ugliness, more different that common human body, even has non-structured body. Although they look cruel outside, they are actually kind-hearted and still show their considerate personality. In addition, the purpose of this research is to identify and compare grotesque characters in three objects. Then, the researcher looks for the similarities and differences among three objects to get the comparison. Furthermore, this research used literary critic method of Ian Dey (1993), it is qualitative analysis. It is used to elaborate the data one by one of each object and to get the detail of grotesque characters. Then, the researcher also used comparative method of Susan Bassnett (1999) to compare the topic. Eventually, the result of this research is the similarities and differences among three objects. The similarities are grotesque, conflict, alienation, social relationship and resolution, and the differences are plot, social status, and causes of grotesque.
