Abstract

Taboo word is one of linguistic phenomena which exist in most languages because every member of society has different way to express his/her thoughts in language, then movie and literature are the artistic expressions of human mind. In this research, This is England movie is used because the characters frequently use taboo words in their conversations so that the utterances can be analyzed easily. Therefore, this research aims to find out: (1) types of Taboo words used, (2) the functions of Taboo words uttered by the characters, and (3) taboo words that can affect the social factors of the characters in This is England movie. The method used in this research is descriptive qualitative method. The theories used to analyze the data are from Batistella (2005) and Wardaugh (2006) as the main theory and also other related theories as the supporting one. The findings of the data analysis show that only certain taboo words and some functions appear in This is England movie. Based on the findings of data analysis, it can be drawn conclusion that type of taboo words that frequently appear in This is England movie is obscenity that is showed by the word of “fuck”, “fucking”, and “fuck off”. It becomes a common phenomenon in English language that all bad things or stuffs even all bad feelings are usually can be relieved by saying those ‘F’ words. The functions that frequently appear in This is England movie are to draw attention to oneself, to show contempt, and to be provocative. It is only in certain topic that talked in some scenes that show the function of “to mock authority”. Thus, it shows that taboo words certainly can affect social factors of the character in this movie: between males and female, kids and adults, and affect so much to someone’s life in which Shaun himself is the ‘product’ of taboo words.
