Abstract
MasterChef is a reality show program that is very popular in various countries around the world. This program provides the cooking skill of participants from various backgrounds. In this reality show, there are communication activities that lead to spontaneous and natural speech between the judges and the contestants. One of them is the speech act that contains expressive illocutionary act at the end of the cooking session of this program. This study focused on the search for expressive illocutionary act types and the illocutionary function contained in the program. In analyzing these problems, the researcher used Searle's speech act theory to analyze expressive illocutionary acts and Leech's theory to analyze the function of an illocutionary act in the program. This study used qualitative methods, which emphasize a deeper understanding of a problem. The researcher used documentation techniques as a data collection technique because the data source of this research is taken from the video. The data analysis technique used in this study was proposed by Miles and Huberman, namely data reduction, data display, then data verification and conclusion. From the analysis of research, it is concluded that there are fifty-seven utterances included expressive illocutionary acts in the MasterChef USA Season 9 Episode 1-5, namely twenty-nine of praising, fourteen of criticizing, four of thanking, seven of congratulating, and three of apologizing. In addition, the researcher found forty-three of convivial, nine of competitive, and five of conflictive function. Meanwhile, the collaborative function is not found by the researcher in the program.
