Abstract

Literary works that are of great interest are novels, especially those in the horror genre because they have their characteristics. This study examines mystical discourse and oral tradition through three elements of intrinsic elements, namely characterization, plot, and setting contained in the novel Dracula by Bram Stoker and Asih by Risa Saraswati. Researcher chose this novel because it is quite popular and is still the choice of readers. This study uses Susan Basnett's (1993) theory and is strengthened by several theories from other experts to categorize and compare the elements of mysticism and oral tradition in these two novels. The researcher used a qualitative descriptive method to analyze the data by describing the story analysis in the novel. This method is to identify, categorize, interpret and conclude research data descriptively. The findings of this study; main and additional characters who have an important role in shaping the plot and setting. Then elements of mysticism are found in religion, disease, psychology, customs and culture of the people, and the backgrounds in the making of these two novels.
