Abstract

This research was intended to explore students’ perception towards the idiomatic language teaching and learning in the Speaking for Social Interaction subject in the first semester, and the importance of idioms in English language mastery. Specifically, this research was aimed to gain two objectives: 1) To find out the students’ perception of the teaching and learning idioms in the classroom; and 2) To reveal the Indonesian EFL students’ perception of the importance and the need of idioms in the mastery of English. This research used a qualitative research design with case study specifications. The participants of this study were nine students of class D from the 2018 generation that sorted based on their achievement level. Questionnaires and interviews were used to obtain data about students’ perception towards the teaching and learning of idiomatic expressions in the classroom and the importance of idioms in mastering English. The result has shown that in this case study most respondents perceived idiomatic language teaching and learning in the classroom had an adequate portion in syllabus and class meeting, had used proper methods and media applied, and had no difficulties in the teaching and learning activity, that resulted in their adequate knowledge of idioms. After that, more than half of respondents perceived idioms as an important part of the English language due to their usefulness in communication and the need for language knowledge learning. Most of the respondents agreed that idioms are important in improving their English skills, but less than half of them admitted to being motivated to continue learning them. This research is helpful for evaluating the learning activity of idioms and knowing students’ perception about idiom they learn.
