Abstract
In the presidential debate, presidential candidates argue, and express the vision and mission, as well as policies that will be carried out by presidential candidates in their country. In delivering statements in their debates, speakers often do not realize an important aspect of language that affects the image of a presidential candidate in public, namely the aspect of politeness. This study aims to determine the speech used by presidential candidates in expressing their arguments in the debate whether to observe the maxims of politeness or violate the maxims of politeness. This study also aims to reveal the functions of speech in speech that comply with the maxim of politeness and speech that violates the maxim of politeness. This study uses Leech's theory of politeness principles, and Searle's theory of speech act. This study uses a qualitative descriptive method that emphasizes the description of the data. In this study, each data was analyzed based on the politeness maxims contained in the speech, as well as the assertive function contained in the politeness speech. There are five politeness maxims in speech that observes and violates politeness maxims, and there are five speech functions that contain politeness and violate politeness maxims. Every speech uttered by a presidential candidate observes different politeness maxims and violates different politeness maxims. Speech that observes and violates the maxim of politeness has a different function of assertive speech in each speech. In polite speech, the function of speech has more expressive, reporting, and suggesting functions. In contrast to speech that violates the maxim of politeness, the function of speech has more claiming and complaining functions.
