Abstract
This study aims to identify and analyze the presupposition types in Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s stone novel and the implied meaning that influences the conveyed meaning of the presupposition by the character’s utterances . The data obtained from utterances in the novel in the form of textual that is surrounded by context that forms the explanation. The research method used a qualitative descriptive method. The data in this study have been collected through classifying procedure to select the utterances that match with the presupposition characteristic’s types according to George Yule theory. The finding shows following results namely: 16 utterances data are existential presupposition, 7 utterances data are factive presupposition, 5 utterances data are lexical presupposition, 4 utterances data are structural presupposition, 2 utterances data are non factive pressuppositon, and 4 utterances data are counter-factual presupposition. In total there are 38 utterances data of presupposition are found and analyzed in this Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s stone novel, in this finding the Existential presupposition is the most-used type of presupposition since most of the utterances show about the existence of someone such as the main character and the least-used is non factive presupposition since it is marked by the use of some certain verbs such as “dream”, “imagine” and “pretend” which are not so many found in the novel.
