Abstract

Cadence contains values of goodness that are not very visible because they are hidden behind the non-explicit language. There are positive connotations and negative connotations that are potentially contained in it. The writer studied only the positive connotation meaning, therefore the study will be more focused on one topic. This study used the army running cadences of The United States Navy SEALs as the object. The writer had two research questions, (1) what are the positive characteristic resulted from connotative meaning of the words in The United States Navy SEALs running cadences, (2) how do these words and phrases give positive meaning to their lines, and further the cadences as a whole to the overall cadences. Therefore, this study aims to identify the words and phrases in The United States Navy SEALs running cadences that contain positive connotative meaning and to analyze how these words and phrases give positive meaning to their lines and further the cadences as a whole. The writer used positive connotation meaning analysis based on the theory of Leech (1981). The method used in this study is a qualitative approach that is descriptive analysis, which is a study that provides an objective description. There are five characteristics are very close and shared by those who are members of the Navy SEALs found in the army running cadences of The United States Navy SEALs. The five important characteristics are bravery, confidence, work hard, loyalty, and calmness. From the characteristics that exist, it illustrates that many positive qualities can be taken from soldiers, beyond the scope of the soldiers who usually seem scary. And the use of positive meaning is made to make people feel good, treat them more pleasantly and try not to offend someone's feelings.
