Abstract
Assertive speech acts is related to what happen in the world. These speech acts carry the values of true or false. Therefore, the aims of this research are: 1. To describe the functions of assertive speech acts in Ariana Grande “Thank U, Next” interview with Zach Sang Show 2. To analyze the assertive speech acts conveyed in Ariana Grande “Thank U, Next” interview with Zach Sang Show. This research used descriptive qualitative approach as a research design of the study and used the main theory of Searle and Vanderveken (1985) and Yule (1996). The functions of assertive speech act found in Ariana Grande’s utterance were to state (20 data), to argue (8 data), to report (6 data), to insist (5 data), to guess (5 data), to claim (4 data), to remind (4 data), to deny (4 data), to inform (2 data), to praise (2 data), to assure (2 data), to suggest (2 data), to predict (2 data), to blame (1 data), and to boast (1 data). While the ways of delivering the assertive speech act were done directly (48 data) in the form of declarative used as statement and (6 data) in the form of interogative used as a question and indirectly (8 data) categorized as indirectness within assertive speech acts and (5 data) categorized as indirectness across assertive speech acts. From the findings of data analysis, the result of this research can be concluded that assertive speech acts can be used to make a statement in order to answer the questions from the interviewer. This could help people to understand the speaker’s intention. It could also help to avoid misunderstanding because of the misinterpretation that happened during the conversation. Hence, to state some facts in the interview assertive speech acts were mostly used in the form of direct speech to deliver the utterance directly.
