Abstract

Social conflict is a conflict related to society caused by the views that occur in society. Literary works of the prose genre are presented as the most dominant literary works in presenting social reality, one of which is social conflict. So this research will discuss the conflict of characters in the novel The Great Gatsby and the novel Tenggelamnya Kapal Van Der Wijck. This research is shown to find three things: 1) the form of social conflict, 2) social conflict resolution, 3) similarities and differences between the novel The Great Gatsby and the novel Tenggelamnya Kapal Van Der Wijck. This study used descriptive qualitative method. The research data is in the form of quotations in dialogue and paragraph fragments with reading and note-taking techniques. The problem in this study uses Lewis A Coser's social conflict theory and uses a sociological literary approach because social conflict is related to social phenomena in society. The result of this research is that the social conflicts that occur in the two novels are mostly realistic conflicts caused by betrayals that are considered mutually disappointing. Conflict resolution in The Great Gatsby novel, Strong tactics, Anger = composure, and misperpection. Meanwhile, conflict resolution in the novel Tenggelamnya Kapal Van Der Wijck is done by way of commitment, Anger = composure, and Many-one. Both novels are romantic novels and have the same form of social conflict, but the conflict resolution that occurs in the two novels is different.
