Abstract

This bachelor thesis focuses on the analysis about symbolism. Literature has always a symbol, without it there can be no literature or even language because words themselves are symbols. In the hunger games trilogy a mockingjay appeared as a bird and a pin but in its novel a word mockingjay not only seen as a bird and a pin, it has more symbols and meanings that important to know. So, in this graduating paper the researcher decided to analyze how mockingjay symbol describe in Suzanne Collin’s The Hunger Games trilogy and explore its meaning. The grand theory which the researcher used to analyze this research is Frye’s theory. The theory has four element of symbol, there are Symbol as motif and sign, Symbol as symbol as image, symbol as archetype, and symbol as monad, the researcher mixed those symbol into the object and apply it into the result of those symbol which is found in it. The employed method of this paper is descriptive method. Collin’s literary works was analyzed using the theory of symbolism because the researcher read Collin’s work containing the symbol of mockingjay which is very important to analyze, it becomes important because the researcher wants to tell people that a mockingjay words contains of many symbol, it’s not only a bird and a pin. The data were taken from Suzanne Collin Novel The Hunger Gamestrilogy entiled :The Hunger Games, Catching Fire and Mockingjay. Another book that supported the analysis is Theory of Semiotics about symbol, and Theory of Symbol by Northrop Frye. Furthermore, the data were analyzed through some steps. Those are: studying all data, analyzing data, and drawing conclusion. The result of this research is the researcher found four symbol of mockingjay, there are symbol of solidarity (5 data), symbol of hope (4 data), symbol of rebellion (4 data) and symbol of KatnissEverdeen (2 data). The dominant symbol in this research was mockingjay symbolizing solidarity, because the data obtained from that symbol are more dominant than the other symbols. The main character of The Hunger Games novel and this four symbol of mockingjay connected with the four element of Frye’s Theory of Symbol and it could be a mockingjay as motif and sign (2 data), a mockingjay as image (1 data), a mockingjay as archetype (1 data) and a mockingjay as monad (1 data).The dominant symbol in this research was mockingjay asmotif and sign, because the data obtained from that symbol are more dominant than the other symbols.
