Abstract
Lyric is written form of communication. It constains some functions of sentence. Complement is the unit of syntax that occupies a complementary function in a sentence. The existence of complement depends on verb. A sentence may have or not have complement. Therefore, the aims of this research are to identify types of complement used in John Legend’s lyric and to analyze the ways of complement fulfilling function on sentence in John Legend’s lyric. The writer uses Kim’s (2008) and Saeed’s (1997) theories to analyze. Meanwhile, The research uses qualitative method which provides the description of object. With this method, fragments of John Legend’s lyric are identified which sentence contain complement. Then, analyze data based on problems contained in research problems.There are 65 data of complement found, including : 8 complements in You & 1, 17 complements in All of me, 12 complements in Who We Think We Are, 5 complements in Made to love, 13 complements in Conversations in The Dark, 6 complements in Actions, 3 Complements in Wild, 2 complements in Bigger love. From data analysis findings, the result this research shows that there are 2 types of complement, namely, 52 predicative complements and 14 oblique complements. In this finding research, predicative complement is the most-used type of complement since most verbs need to complete on its subject, its object and oblique complement is the least complement since it serves as subject and object.
