Abstract

The utterances that are often conveyed by a leader have a great influence on their listeners. When the leader conveys an expressions that contains policies for the audiences it is important, therefore as a listeners must listen to what is conveyed by the leader. This can be expressed through a speech, news, announcement or interview. One of the example of influential persons is Barack Obama the former presidents of America. This study focuses on the use of expressive type of the illocutionary act of Barack Obama in his interviews at Post Racial America after his Election 2017 and Barack Obama’s speaks at the town hall on policing and racism 2020 on NBC News, and to find out direct and indirect speech acts according to John Searle's theory. The researcher used qualitative analysis method and applied descriptive method in the form of content analysis to analyze the type of expressive illocutionary acts and direct and indirect speech acts. Data were obtained based on transcripts of the two interviews from the NBC News website. This research found three types of expressive speech acts on Barack Obama’s interview 2017, among them are: praising, wishing, and lamenting. Then in the Barack Obama’s interview 2020, the researcher found six types of expressive speech acts on among them are greeting, thanking, praising, wishing, congratulating, and lamenting. Expressions of praising are dominantly in both the interview with 58 data as the result in total. In addition this research found the direct speech acts as the dominant of both the speeches.
